That’s Fishin’ – April 2019

That's fishing headerMan releasing billfishThe bite has been HOT HOT HOT this past couple of months here in Quepos. There has been some truly world-class Sailfish fishing with some very impressive catch numbers posted with lots of boats experiencing double digit Sailfish release days during February and March…and an awful lot more fish some days!

There have been some stunning Blue, Black and Striped Marlin caught making lots of dreams come true. Dominical resident Jerry Wells has landed two stunning Marlin this season during trips aboard GOOD DAY—his latest fish a beautiful 300 pounder!

The Tuna fishing has been on fire also with some fantastic Tuna caught by the Quepos Charter boats recently, with several boats landing Tuna in the 150-200lb range, fish-of-a-lifetime stuff for sure! The big Tuna are typically caught on Bonito or Blue Runner live baits, however, often equally as effective are the Fat Daddy Squids from SQUIDNATION. Trolled slowly but jerked aggressively just 20-40 foot behind your boat, when the Tuna are in the mood for them they promise to give you some of the most visual bites you are likely to encounter in your fishing career! Think 100 lb plus Tuna jumping clean out of the water just 20 feet from your boat with a big fake squid in his mouth! There are also plenty of smaller Tuna in the 20-80lb range that will take live baits or various styles of Jigs, dark coloured Bassworms have been a particular favourite this season. Encountering a group of feeding Tuna off the coast of Costa Rica is a sight in itself as they gather with mega-pods of hundreds of Spinner Dolphins which put on a spectacular show as they work together to herd up the bait fish, all of this going on right here in our backyard!

The Shoe teamAPPLAUDING THE PESCADORAS! (Lady Anglers)

What a truly amazing time we all had in late February at the Pescadora Billfish Championship. After a whole year of planning the time was finally here for 22 teams of 81 lady Anglers to do battle to see who would become the top female Angler (The Pescadora!) on the planet! It was always going to be a fun & champagne filled weekend but the fishing did not disappoint either with the best bite that we had seen all season developing just days before the tournament! An incredible 512 Billfish were caught & released during the two day tournament, huge congrats to Team UNO MAS who took top honours with 49 Sailfish, 2nd was BIG OH with 44 Sailfish, and 3rd was GAME PLAN with 40 Sailfish. Yes folks, those numbers are correct, the bite was well & truly on that weekend!!

The heaviest Dorado was caught by TEAM TIPSEA fishing aboard THE KING & I with a 52 lb Dorado. Whilst the MPV GOOD DAY GIRLS that were being represented by ladies from Costa Rica, Philippines, & England took the top Tuna honours with a two fish total of 80lb.

What a superb event! Huge congrats to all involved and we are already looking forward to next year!

There has been some fantastic Inshore fishing during the past month or so with some real trophy fish being landed. The Corvina (Seabass) fishing has been especially hot with some HUGE Corvina being caught recently. A shout out to the guys on Tres Niñas and also Capt. Roy Zapata both catching specimen Corvinas in the 40lb range. Corvina can be caught slow jigging or by using live bait fished close to the bottom. At the River mouths there have been some nice Snook caught together with small-mid Sized Roosterfish, Snappers, Jacks, Mackerel, and Tripletail. If a big Roosterfish is what you are looking for then head to the rocks and in slightly deeper water where a slow trolled live bait will give you a chance of a trophy Roosterfish. April & May is a great time to target big Snook at the Parrita, Naranjo, Savegre, or Baru river mouths. Will someone break the 59lb 12oz world record this year? Good luck out there!

A huge welcome to all Anglers that are visiting us this month from literally all around the world for the 2019 Offshore World Championships which takes place April 28 – May 3rd. We wish all competitors an excellent week’s fishing and an enjoyable stay here in Quepos & Manuel Antonio. The power of the ‘BRAZILIAN STORM’ could not be matched in last years event with the Brazilians putting on excellent performance taking top honours and most of the top ten places. Can any other nation match them this year?
