A lot is happening in Quepos with the month of November finished up. Visitors that came for the week of Thanksgiving kept the fleet of charter boats busy fishing catching record numbers of Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado and Tuna.

For the month of December, hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! Our fishermen are gearing up for the high season starting “NOW”, the month of January. All captains and mates changing lines, polishing, cleaning and looking over every part of their boats to be ready for another great season here in “Fishing Paradise”.

On to new information for our captains to utilize. You guys can get information to help catch fish! How? Through Oceanographic Information Module Site at www.miocimar.vcr.ac.cr. With this info you can plan your trips. It also gives you tides, temperatures, currents, as well as a weekly forecast for wave activity on our side, the Pacific Coast.

Now something that you (and myself) aren’t going to like. The cost of sport fishing is going up. Incopesca (Costa Rican fisheries Institute) is raising rates effective January 1, 2012. Nonresidents will be paying $30.00 for annual fishing license. The monthly license for $13.00 is gone, vanished, no longer, caput! Boat Registrations are also going up.

Closing on a positive note. Living in Quepos, Costa Rica with the people, the weather and last but not least the fishing is AWESOME!!!

At Tropical Waters Sport Fishing we believe and support “catch & release”, to preserve and to save our billfish population for generations to come.

Well, what can be said for the month of November for fishing in Quepos, Costa Rica, as well as the fishing in most of the waters of Costa Rica “RAIN”!! On the upside with December upon us the rain should be subsiding. We still have almost nightly showers and a few daytime mists. With all that, there is light at the end of our rainy season and the beginning of our beautiful sunny days ahead.

Our fishing season looks to be very promising this year already! Since the beginning of November, Dorado (Mahi, Mahi) have been running 8 to 12 miles out from shore. Boats have been catching 15 to 30 pounders. Compared to last year’s numbers the Dorado seem to be on Vacation. The Sailfish have been on the rise. Quepos boats have been catching anywhere from 1 to 6 Sailfish offshore approximately 30 to 40 miles out.

With the rain letting up and the rivers and streams slowing down with run off waters subsiding, our oceans should be starting to clear up from all the silt. Once the silt settles the inshore fishing should be picking back up. Especially the Rooster Fish, Cobera, Snapper and others will be biting again.

With December here, the Papagayo winds will be arriving. What that means to our fishing is the Sailfish and Marlin will be moving south towards Quepos to Panama. The winds cause a lack of oxygen pushing the Sailfish and Marlin to travel towards the center and Southern parts of Costa Rica.

Personally, I’m looking forward to a great season of fishing!! We wish all you fishermen out there the best of luck. We at Tropical Waters Sport Fishing support catch and release to keep the fish population up for future generations to come.

June and July have been fantastic months for Sportfishing this year. First day of June, Ojaran III released 3 sails. Way to go!

For those who want to catch fish and dinner for sure, our recommendation is going bottom fishing. Ojaran III with Junior and Alex, caught 55 Red Snappers on June the 12th and 31 Red Snappers and 2 Cubera Snappers the next day. Going back to bottom fishing on the 14th, Ojaran II fished 27 Pargos and the Ojaran III 35 Pargos. Some rain, some darkness in the sky and even some rough tides but a lot of fish. Both Ojarans had 15 Yellow-fin Tuna on June and the first days of July. 26 Sailfish were released up to July the 9th and the best catch of the month, a nice 400lb Blue Marlin and a Dorado for the team “Junex” on the Ojaran III. More Dorados, Jacks, and Roosterfish around the month.

Contact Luna Tours Sportfishing at Hotel Best Western Kamuk lobby, downtown Quepos central. Book now Ojaran II, Ojaran III, Magic Moon and the Reel Deal (27 ft to 33ft) on full days or half day charters. We also arrange other boats for charter up to 46 ft. Contact us at 2777-0725 (office), 8869-4808 (24 hour cell) and visit our web site www.lunatours.net. And remember, good things come to those who bait.

Hola amigos. This month has given fantastic daily reports. Boats have been fishing several days a week and they have had awesome bites. Marlin, sailfish and lots of Tuna for offshore fishing and the brave roosterfish, mackerels, jacks and even some sea bass for inshore trips. Ojaran III had a great day on May 24th, reporting 2 Sails, 4 yellow-fin tuna and 2 Dorados. Some other boats report more Tuna and Sails during the end of this month. Great day for Ojaran II on May 31st with 1 Blue Marlin, 1 Sailfish and 4 Yellow-fin Tuna. The same day, Ojaran III fished 5 yellow-fin tuna and 2 Sails. First day of June Ojaran II had 3 Sails and on the 4th Ojaran III fished 7 nice Yellow-fin Tunas.

It seems like Tuna will be on top this green season which is great for those who love to catch their own dinner. Marlins have been flipping all around and Sails still biting.

2011 began with a great bite so far. First two months had good reports from all the boats around Quepos. Thumbs up for all the crews, owners and everyone involved with Sportfishing in this area. You all do a great job that keeps Quepos on the map as one of the greatest places around the world for Sportfishing. March gave the highest numbers on the reports. Ojaran II, Ojaran III and Reel Deal boated and released 224 sailfish, 6 Dorados, 2 blue Marlin (one on the tournament), some Roosters, Jacks and many Mackerels. April means the end of the High Season and also gives a poor report on the first days. Only 13 sails, 2 Dorados, 9 Roosters and again some Mackerels especially because customers choice has been inshore. Ojaran III had 6 Sails, Reel Deal had 2 and 1 Dorado last April 6th which means that it’s not going to be that bad.

What about the Costa Rica Classic?

Costa Rica Classic was as successful as always. Held in Quepos this year with 14 boats in competition, we had another chance to see how much people like fishing and helping at the same time. C.R.C raises funds for the Boomer Esiason Foundation that fights against cystic fibrosis. Personalities, great boats, excellent crews, delicious food, good music and more friends were some of the special features as every year. Special congratulations to Captain Tucker on the “G Rod” from Los Sueños for the first place with 24 sailfish, Captain Munford on the “Billfish” for the second place with 20 sailfish and Captain Junior and Mate Alex on the “Ojaran III” for the third place with 13 Sailfish, 5 Dorado and 1 Marlin. Congratulations to the crews. Special thanks to Hotel La Mariposa, Marina Pez Vela, Jefe’s Restaurant and all the sponsors. See you next year.

The best policy, keeps the best fish alive.

That is what anglers around the world understand about good sport fishing. Preserve the most beautiful species flipping out of the ocean has been the main goal for old and young through the last years. That is why Sailfish, Marlin, Roosterfish and some others are released every day. Captains and mates take care of every game fish during the process of boating. They exactly know what to do in order to keep them alive and calculate the time out of water. “Catch and Release” has made an important change since it has been practiced.

Luna Tours boats released 10 Roosters, 4 Marlin and 123 Sailfish on February. First week and a half in March before Costa Rica Classic 2011, Ojaran II released 24 Sails and 5 Roosters. Ojaran III released 29 Sails and Reel Deal released 7 sailfish and 1 rooster. This gives us a total of 12 Marlin, 32 Roosters and 248 Sailfish released in 2011 only in our boats by March the 9th. This helps to conserve the species and keep the game alive.

The next time you visit a restaurant for sea food give a chance to the delicious Mahi-Mahi or Tuna. Some restaurants still serve Sail. If you were lucky and got some eatable fish on your catch of the day, try the finest restaurants in town. Our favorite and most recommended, El Gran Escape.

The Costa Rican fishing “agüizotes”

Walking around the slips at the marina and enjoying the sunsets at the dock while waiting for the boats to come, you can realize about fishing “agüizotes”. “Agüizote” means superstition for ticos. Those are the things that Captains and mates believe about the boats, customers and charters.

The top believed “agüizote” stands that boats fail and break off because of the customer and that the replacement boat will fail too. It happened when “Ojaran II” broke head gaskets and “No Limit” couldn’t even get to the place they were because of another engine problem. Customers waited for more than an hour when “Swordfish” picked them up at 12 miles and on the way back on the afternoon ran out of fuel at more than 20 miles. They came back at 9:30 pm when Ojaran III went to rescue with fuel. So, these customers broke 3 boats.

A second “agüizote” stands that when the customer talks about the tip, no fish will be boated. Some people use to joke about better tips if they get many fish. For some crews, that messes the day up. Believe it or not!

And remember…

Do you eat fish?

If you do, inshore fishing is better than ever. As Mahi-mahi and Tuna are not really out there, smoked fish lovers will be more than satisfied with the abundance of Spanish mackerel. Ojaran III and Ojaran II have had more than seventy mackerels in the last month. You can also have some snappers, jacks and in a big quantity, fun to catch but not eatable, Roosterfish. Talking about offshore action, Sailfish is on the top. Ojaran II has released five Sailfish on the first seven days of the month. Ojaran III has had thirteen. A few Marlin and a few Mahi have been caught.

What’s on?

Extreme weather changes have been affecting water temperature. This is a The La Niña Phenomenon year. The La Nina is usually described as a cooler than average sea surface temperature in this area of the Pacific. The La Nina phenomenon is known to occur every few years in this area and beyond, and it is known to last anywhere from a few months to as long as two years or so. Some fish like Dorado, need warmer water temperatures.

Those Lucky Days.

The time has come for this ocean treasure and the year starts with a decent number on the reports. From now until April, boats will chase more Sailfish than any other months of the year. Only in the first two weeks of January, Ojaran II and Ojaran III have released 19 Sailfish. They have come joined with a Marlin and rarely a Mahi-Mahi. This is not really the a good times for Tuna lovers so; we definitely stand up for Billfish during these months and Marlin has been showing up too. The first two weeks in January were nice for Captain Rocco and mate who released 5 Marlin around 200 and 300 pounds on the Ojaran II. Cold water has been enemy number one when looking for a nice Mahi-Mahi these days. Even in those conditions, truly expert captains and mates have found warmer rips where Dorado have been boated. Inshore fishing lovers will be fascinated with the great opportunities to catch a delicious Spanish mackerel. Daily fishing reports stand from 10 to 25 Mackerels in one boat. Ojaran II had 16 on January 12th. Real Deal came back water to catch a couple of Roosterfish the second week of January. Amberjacks have been present too.

Happy New Year, and bienvenidos to Quepos and Manuel Antonio.December began the prime fishing season for our fishing fleet and we’re all geared up and ready to take you fishing. The Marlin bite is fantastic, the Ojaran III with Captain Junior and mate Alex have released (9) Marlin in the last 4 days. Yellow Fin Tuna are being boated some 80 pounders.
