June and July have been fantastic months for Sportfishing this year. First day of June, Ojaran III released 3 sails. Way to go!
For those who want to catch fish and dinner for sure, our recommendation is going bottom fishing. Ojaran III with Junior and Alex, caught 55 Red Snappers on June the 12th and 31 Red Snappers and 2 Cubera Snappers the next day. Going back to bottom fishing on the 14th, Ojaran II fished 27 Pargos and the Ojaran III 35 Pargos. Some rain, some darkness in the sky and even some rough tides but a lot of fish. Both Ojarans had 15 Yellow-fin Tuna on June and the first days of July. 26 Sailfish were released up to July the 9th and the best catch of the month, a nice 400lb Blue Marlin and a Dorado for the team “Junex” on the Ojaran III. More Dorados, Jacks, and Roosterfish around the month.

Hola amigos. This month has given fantastic daily reports. Boats have been fishing several days a week and they have had awesome bites. Marlin, sailfish and lots of Tuna for offshore fishing and the brave roosterfish, mackerels, jacks and even some sea bass for inshore trips. Ojaran III had a great day on May 24th, reporting 2 Sails, 4 yellow-fin tuna and 2 Dorados. Some other boats report more Tuna and Sails during the end of this month. Great day for Ojaran II on May 31st with 1 Blue Marlin, 1 Sailfish and 4 Yellow-fin Tuna. The same day, Ojaran III fished 5 yellow-fin tuna and 2 Sails. First day of June Ojaran II had 3 Sails and on the 4th Ojaran III fished 7 nice Yellow-fin Tunas.
It seems like Tuna will be on top this green season which is great for those who love to catch their own dinner. Marlins have been flipping all around and Sails still biting.

2011 began with a great bite so far. First two months had good reports from all the boats around Quepos. Thumbs up for all the crews, owners and everyone involved with Sportfishing in this area. You all do a great job that keeps Quepos on the map as one of the greatest places around the world for Sportfishing. March gave the highest numbers on the reports. Ojaran II, Ojaran III and Reel Deal boated and released 224 sailfish, 6 Dorados, 2 blue Marlin (one on the tournament), some Roosters, Jacks and many Mackerels. April means the end of the High Season and also gives a poor report on the first days. Only 13 sails, 2 Dorados, 9 Roosters and again some Mackerels especially because customers choice has been inshore. Ojaran III had 6 Sails, Reel Deal had 2 and 1 Dorado last April 6th which means that it’s not going to be that bad.
That is what anglers around the world understand about good sport fishing. Preserve the most beautiful species flipping out of the ocean has been the main goal for old and young through the last years. That is why Sailfish, Marlin, Roosterfish and some others are released every day. Captains and mates take care of every game fish during the process of boating. They exactly know what to do in order to keep them alive and calculate the time out of water. “Catch and Release” has made an important change since it has been practiced.
Luna Tours boats released 10 Roosters, 4 Marlin and 123 Sailfish on February. First week and a half in March before Costa Rica Classic 2011, Ojaran II released 24 Sails and 5 Roosters. Ojaran III released 29 Sails and Reel Deal released 7 sailfish and 1 rooster. This gives us a total of 12 Marlin, 32 Roosters and 248 Sailfish released in 2011 only in our boats by March the 9th. This helps to conserve the species and keep the game alive.
The next time you visit a restaurant for sea food give a chance to the delicious Mahi-Mahi or Tuna. Some restaurants still serve Sail. If you were lucky and got some eatable fish on your catch of the day, try the finest restaurants in town. Our favorite and most recommended, El Gran Escape.
If you do, inshore fishing is better than ever. As Mahi-mahi and Tuna are not really out there, smoked fish lovers will be more than satisfied with the abundance of Spanish mackerel. Ojaran III and Ojaran II have had more than seventy mackerels in the last month. You can also have some snappers, jacks and in a big quantity, fun to catch but not eatable, Roosterfish. Talking about offshore action, Sailfish is on the top. Ojaran II has released five Sailfish on the first seven days of the month. Ojaran III has had thirteen. A few Marlin and a few Mahi have been caught.
What’s on?
Extreme weather changes have been affecting water temperature. This is a The La Niña Phenomenon year. The La Nina is usually described as a cooler than average sea surface temperature in this area of the Pacific. The La Nina phenomenon is known to occur every few years in this area and beyond, and it is known to last anywhere from a few months to as long as two years or so. Some fish like Dorado, need warmer water temperatures.

Captain Junior and mate Alex caught 1 Marlin, 4 Sailfish and 2 Dorado on January 29th. Captain Mike and mate Joseph caught a 65 pounds Yellow Fin Tuna on February the 5th. Ojaran II had a broken rod when a huge Manta ray pulled like a bull in a split second. (Sorry Mike).
