How I became a Five Element Acupuncturist

By Michael Arnold

I am always fascinated how life has a way of guiding you in a particular direction, often without asking you first.

I didn’t start out to become an acupuncturist. My first passion was biology and the study of what makes living things tick. It always amazed me how much is going on inside our body right now that we are completely unaware of. Even something simple like breathing involves millions of chemical reactions and has taken millions of years to evolve.

It was with this in mind that I embarked on a degree in Neuroscience at aged 19. There is so much we don’t understand about how the brain and mind works. Scientists can’t even agree on what it means to be “conscious”. I wanted to get involved in research that was attempting to answer some of these big mysteries.

However fate had a different idea for me. While at university I started to suffer from insomnia. Someone suggested I try acupuncture and I thought I might as well give it a try.

Upon visiting Dave, my Five Element Acupuncturist, I was impressed by his ability to ask the right questions and instantly felt at ease in his presence. However what amazed me the most was how I felt after each session. I would often leave with a feeling of euphoria and a huge grin from ear to ear for no apparent reason. People started to comment that I seemed somehow different – more at peace within myself. After about 6 sessions my insomnia completely disappeared. In its place was left a feeling of peace and happiness, greater than anything I had experienced before in my life. Wow this Five Element Acupuncture was something else!

At this point the decision to learn how to practice it myself wasn’t one that I consciously chose. There just simply wasn’t another option in my mind! I realised that although Neuroscience was fascinating I could actually learn more about the nature of consciousness by helping people with this unique system of medicine called Five Element Acupuncture. After finishing my degree I enrolled in a 3 year full time course at the School of Five Element Acupuncture in London. It was the best decision of my life and I never looked back. Now with over 10 years experience in Five Element Acupuncture I still find myself in awe at the power of this system to bring about profound transformation in body, mind and spirit.
