OsSpanish Sucks

Let’s play with VERBOS. PRESENT.

 By Os

Hola amig@s. ¿Todo bien? ¿Remember what we learned one year ago? I do. Let’s review it pretty quick.

We learned that there are three big types of verbs:

The verbos that end in “AR”,   like  HablAR;

The verbos that end in “ER”,   like  ComER;

The verbos that end in “IR”,    like  VivIR.

 We learned three important “action words” or verbs.  Notice that they all end in –R and they all mean to do something:

HablAR=TO speak;    ComER=TO eat;    VivIR=TO live.

We learned that when we “play” with them, we change the endings according to “who” does the action.  Just for the record, the endings of a verb are called CONJUGATIONS.  Let’s review the three patterns of endings that we learned.

Spanish Pura Vida

#1.  –AR Pattern.  PRESENTE.

Drop the –AR ending of an infinitive, like hablAR, and add the following endings:

                Yo                            hablO

                Usted                      hablA

                Ella – Él                  hablA

                Nosotros                hablAMOS

                Ustedes                  hablAN

                Ell@s                      hablAN

#2.  –ER Pattern.  PRESENTE.

Drop the –ER ending of an infinitive, like comER, and add the following endings:

                Yo                            comO

                Usted                      comE

                Ella – Él                  comE

                Nosotros                comEMOS

                Ustedes                  comEN

                Ell@s                      comEN

#3.  –IR Pattern.  PRESENTE.

Drop the –IR ending of an infinitive, like vivlR, and add the following endings:

                Yo                            vivO

                Usted                      vivE

                Ella – Él                  vivE

                Nosotros                vivIMOS

                Ustedes                  vivEN

                Ell@s                      vivEN

We learned that there are hundreds of verbs and mostly of them follow a regular pattern.  We had to memorize 3 regular patterns, one for each type of verb:  “-AR”,  “-ER”,  “-IR”.

#1.  –AR Pattern.  PRESENTE.

Drop the –AR ending of an infinitive, like hablAR, and add the following endings:

O

AMOS

A

AN

#2.  –ER Pattern.  PRESENTE.

Drop the –ER ending of an infinitive, like comER, and add the following endings:

O

EMOS

E

EN

#3.  –IR Pattern.  PRESENTE.

Drop the –IR ending of an infinitive, like vivlR, and add the following endings:

O

IMOS

E

EN

We learned that for this and future articles we will have to “match” the endings of the patterns with the following people (personal pronouns):

I

we

you, she, he

you all, they

HablAR = TO speak – TO talk

I   hablO

we   hablAMOS

you, s/he   hablA

you all, they   hablAN

ComER = TO eat

 comO

we   comEMOS

you, s/he   comE

you all, they   comEN

VivIR = TO live

 vivO

we   vivIMOS

you, s/he   vivE

you all, they   vivEN

We learned that those capital letters ( O – A – E – AMOS –  EMOS – IMOS – AN – EN ) are the endings that we need to use when we speak español about something that happens in present time, anytime when we talk about habitual actions that we normally do, that we always do.  Whatever happens or is happening now, in this present time, TODAY.  PRESENTE.

Next month we are gonna learn how to play with verbs in past tense.  PASADO.
