That’s Fishin’ – November 2014

The phone rings. I look at the display. It’s one of my best fishing buddies here in Costa Rica. He says he’s got our fall trip all hooked up. I grin. My heart starts beating faster, I struggle to listen closer. The trip is 3 days, with one of my favorite Captains and Crew. Oh, and the owner is coming along too. They’d love to see the two of you come (meaning my husband and I). Only cost is fuel. This is a fishing mojo trip between friends. Sweet, I think to myself, I’ve already got the cash stashed, it’s gonna be rockin. I thank my friend and let him know that I’ll get back to him right away.

I hit the button on the phone, took a deep sigh and felt my heart slow; almost immediately. For I knew I couldn’t go on this trip, the dates didn’t work for me. No option. This is the kind of letdowns you get when you are Born to Fish, and Forced to Work. Not easy friends, not easy at all.

So, I’ve gotten to hear second hand about the beautiful fishing right now and in the past month. UNBELIEVABLE, my friends who went on the mojo trip, caught 12 Marlin in 3.5 hours. Mojo filled. Just because my fishing ego has taken a hit this month, I am including a grainy-taken-from-a-video photo of my 350 pound black marlin that I brought in. Coincidence or not, I caught this marlin with the same friend who called about the mojo trip.

The action has been hitting all over the board, you’ve just got to get out there. Friends brought in 12 Mahi-Mahi (Dorado) in a half-day of fishing last week at the 25 km mark. Other friends who were offshore 100kms+, and they released 7 Striped Marlin, 5 Blue Marlin and a Sailfish.

Winter is coming. So are the Wahoo. October and November are great for these fish. And don’t worry, there’s some inshore action heating up seriously for Snapper and Roosterfish. Offshore, Black and Striped Marlin. The Marlin are here now, just further offshore. They will move in as the waters change, so keep your ear to the ground on where the bite is!

Tournament time is right around the corner. Leading off our season here is The 3rd Quepos Billfish Cup Feb 4-7. Note that this tourney is going to have tickets for locals to the social events and will be priced fairly. (what I was told) I spoke with my tournament contact today, and he told me that there are 12 boats registered already. This is a feel-good tournament, proceeds go to Charity, so if any of you locals are looking to put a team together, drop me a line or drop into The Hawg ‘n’ Bill beachfront restaurant and bar.

Also just confirmed is the return of THE OFFSHORE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. Now this tournament is just awesome. I’ve met some of the coolest fishing people ever here. It is ‘The World’. And they come here for the World Record Catch. Where’s your rod?

My rod misses me, lol, I am going fishing next week with a girlfriend, and man am I looking forward to it. If you’d like some fishing advice, want to swap fish stories, drop me a line.
