I am pretty sure you know why this verb is important…  Right!  It is important because it is the pattern that you follow when you have to conjugate hundreds of –AR verbs. 

–AR verbs?  I see, you forgot that in Spanish there are three kinds of verbs: 

The verbos that end in “AR”,   like  HablAR;

The verbos that end in “ER”,   like  ComER;

The verbos that end in “IR”,    like  VivIR.

 And a lot of them are pretty similar to English.  Try to guess the meaning of these verbs:

abusar – acelerar – acusar – admirar – adorar –  analizar – asociar – autorizar – causar – chatear – civilizar – comentar – comparar – completar – consultar – conversar – declarar – demostrar – escapar – estimar – exagerar – excusar – exportar – fermentar – fornicar – guglear – ignorar – imaginar – implorar – importar – insertar – insultar – invitar – lamentar – negociar – operar – organizar – participar – practicar – preparar – presentar – representar – surfear – terminar – usar – utilizar…   ¡Well done guys!

-AR verbs are the first set of verbs that you need to master.  You will find that the majority of the verbs that you will use in Spanish are AR verbs…  Find a –AR verb, go to the 1 Times Table pattern, pick up the endings, and use the word in context, ¡as often as you can!  It’s called “practice”.

¡Let’s practice!  Let’s do a brain storm using the verb hablar.

Yo hablo español, inglés y un poquito portugués.

Hablo con mi mamá todos los domingos por teléfono.

Hablamos sobre nuestra familia, hablamos sobre mi trabajo y hablamos sobre mi salud.  Yo le digo que no practico yoga pero nado en el mar, le digo que estudio español (yes, I do study Spanish, I study grammar and new techniques to teach) y enseño español a mis estudiantes.

Ella dice que yo trabajo mucho.  Ella me pregunta:  “¿toma sus medicinas?” y yo digo: “sí, tomo mis medicinas”.  Ella me pregunta:  “¿usa drogas?”  Yo le digo:  “no mami, no uso drogas”, (not any more mom, joke) jajajaja…

Yo amo a mi mamá y mi mamá me ama.

Mi novia habla inglés.y español.

Ella habla con su mamá todas las semanas por skype.

Hablan sobre Costa Rica, hablan sobre mí, mi novia dice: “nosotros bailamos salsa y cenamos en un restaurante los fines de semana”.

Ellas hablan sobre ellas mismas, hablan sobre la familia de ellas, sus hermanos trabajan y estudian en U.S.A., hablan sobre la vida en Colorado y la vida aquí en Costa Rica, ella dice:  “yo pago mis deudas y rento una casa”.  Mi novia extraña a su mamá.

 ¿What about you?  Answer this:

 ¿Habla español?  ¿Habla inglés?  ¿Qué idiomas habla?  ¿Habla con su mamá?  ¿Habla con su familia?  ¿Habla con sus amigos?  ¿Con quién habla?   ¿Hablan por teléfono o por skype?   ¿Cuándo hablan?  ¿Qué días hablan?  ¿A qué hora hablan?  ¿Sobre qué hablan?  ¿Practica deportes?  ¿Estudia español?   ¿Trabaja mucho?  ¿Toma medicinas?  ¿Usa drogas?  ¿Baila salsa?  ¿Cena en un restaurante?  ¿Paga sus deudas?  ¿Renta una casa?  ¿Ama a su mamá?  ¿Extraña a su mamá?

 This verb is more than just basic or important.  It is essential; it is the core.  Make it yours.  Put it in your brain.  Put it in your heart.  Master it and it will make our lives easier.
