Meditation…Why do it?

By Shelly Workman

Scientists and doctors agree, more and more, that meditation is having a direct impact on the way the brain is ‘wired’. There has, in recent years, been a dramatic rise of the research and testing of meditation and the exact effects meditation can have on the brain and the heart. This connection helps to build up immunity and prevent diseases.  Meditation is a reliable medication that has no side effects but can bring slow healing through the nervous system. There are various forms of meditation, all of which have separate characteristics that offer a unique method for healing. Stress has been proven to result in depression and fears. That depression from excess stress can result in physical injuries and negative health disorders such as heart disease. Meditation is proving to reduce the risks of such conditions by first reducing the stress. When your bran is relaxed, a dramatic improvement to your mental health occurs, which, in turn, reduces the risks to poor physical health as well.

1) Meditation has the power to transform the negative energies into positive ones which can be used to act as healing benefits for the stress, depression, anxiety, and fears.

2) Meditation helps to integrate all parts of the brain, so that the mind, body and soul are working for the good of the whole.

3) Meditation relaxes the nervous system, the brain and senses and gives them a chance to tune themselves up. Researches have found that meditation provides a far deeper state of relaxation than the simple eyes-closed rest. Nerves are relaxed and refreshed.

4) Meditation builds immunity in the body. When you meditate, you are rousing up your body’s own built-in ability to heal itself and tune itself for action. Researches at University of Wisconsin some years ago proved that those who had the meditation habit had higher levels of antibodies in their blood compared to the non-meditating.

5) Meditation reduces high blood pressure and cholesterol. Eighty percent of hypertensive patients have lowered blood pressure after meditation. Sixteen percent of them could discontinue all of their medications. A longitudinal study by Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation found that cholesterol levels significantly decreased through meditation in hypercholesterolemia patients.
